Belgian Malinois daily needs: body, mind and rest

A Malinois does not do idle. Plan the day around three things.

Body

Expect substantial daily exercise: brisk walks, runs where it is safe, fetch and hikes. A short walk around the block will not cut it for most of these dogs.

Mind

Obedience practice, scent games and food puzzles use up energy that exercise alone cannot. Many owners find that fifteen minutes of focused work tires a Malinois more than an hour of running.

Rest

Teaching a high-drive dog to settle is a skill, and it is as important as any command. Crate time and a mat are part of the routine, not punishments.
